The Rule of Thirds

Hello! Welcome back to media fix, below are photo examples and explanations on my understanding of the Rule of Thirds.

Still image from Psych, February 2, 2007.
The image above is a still from the TV show Psych, 2006. In this image, Shawn Spencer (left) is standing next to Burton Guster (right) and can be used to represent the rule of thirds. The two characters are located both on and inside the vertical lines relating to rule of thirds. This placement suggests a sense of agreement, which can also be supported by the mise-en-scene of the image. As they are both wearing patterned shirts and have similar facial expressions.

Photo example D, By Media Fix, September 14, 2023.

A photo with two stand-in's, that has regard for the Rule of Thirds. Both eyes and landscape (baseboard) are aligned according the rule, figures also have neutral spacing because each resides on a different vertical line.

A photo taken with two stand-in's that have the regard for the Rule of Thirds. Both the eyes and landscape (baseboard) are aligned according to the rule. The photo suggests an attraction or agreement between the two figures. This is because they both reside between either vertical line. In this image, the figures are closer to one another than photo D, moving them closer, or between the vertical lines, helped build an appearance of attraction. Mise en scene also plays a role in the appearance of the tone in this photo. The tint of the image is warmer than in photo D, suggesting certainty. All these aspects brought together help to give the appearance of agreement between the figures.

A photo taken with two stand-in's that has regard the Rule of Thirds. Both eyes and landscape (baseboard) are aligned according to the rule. This image indicates disagreement because the figures are on the opposite sides of the vertical lines.
