Applying and evaluating overexposure solutions

Hi, welcome back to MediaFix! In my previous post I explained how I learned to solve my constant issue of overexposure when filming. Overexposure can be a major problem if it is unintentionally in my film because it can cause detail to be lost and the shots will appear washed out.  By researching, I found videos and articles that showed me how to fix overexposure. One solution is the histogram, this measures tone while filming to tell me if my film is overexposed by leaning to the right, or underexposed by leaning to the left. Then I can adjust my settings accordingly to have the curves remain in the middle, giving me a perfectly exposed shot. While the histogram can show me if there is overexposure, knowing how to use my camera settings of ISO, shutter speed, and aperture, will help me fix it. In the video below I am applying these skills I learned to practice and test out how they work.  Solving overexposure, 5 February, 2024, by Media Fix To apply what I learned, I screen r...

Learning to control exposure: camera settings

Image
Welcome back to MediaFix! Understanding camera settings is essential when fixing overexposure. I needed to know how to use settings like ISO, shutter speed, and aperture during my last film. While I had a basic understanding, I did not fully know how to use them to my advantage in changing the look of a scene.  Multiple factors of settings play a role in controlling exposure in a shot. One I struggled with was understanding how to use was shutter speed. Shutter speed is the amount of light a camera takes in. Because of this, a slower shutter speed will have longer exposure, and faster will have shorter exposure. Applying this knowledge when trying to fix overexposure while filming is key. So if my shot is underexposed, I will need to lower the shutter speed to raise the brightness without using ISO. The opposite applies to overexposure, I would need to raise the shutter speed.  ISO is the International Organization of Standardization. This organization standardizes ...

Learning to control exposure: tools

Image
Hi and welcome back to MediaFix! In my last blog post, I discussed a technical issue I faced when filming my last production using the Blackmagic app. Not only did I learn how to solve that problem, but my struggle with overexposure as well. When filming my most recent work, I struggled to fix overexposure. Simply adjusting the exposure pull did not help, which could have had  multiple potential reasons. However, upon reflection and re-watching parts of the film, along with further research, I learned that I did not understand how to utilize tools related to exposure. Once I re-watched the video provided to us, I discovered a tool that can help me solve the problem of overexposure . This would be using zebras  under overlay on the main menu. When on, they show what in the camera is overexposed. This will be useful when filming because it makes finding the source of overexposure easier, allowing me to adjust my settings more effectively. With help targeting this, each sho...

Blackmagic App: Adjusting focus

Image
Welcome back to MediaFix ! Before beginning production, it is essential for my role as a cinematographer that I am knowledgeable of my camera. This is why I decided to further my research and review the app I will use when filming. This is the Blackmagic camera app, using this app instead of just my main video format on my phone will open opportunities to enhance the footage of our production. The app allows me to change settings to achieve the look I want to create, but to do this I need to know how to use it properly.     Reflecting on my last production, I struggled in certain areas within the Blackmagic app. This included controlling the focus of the shot. To further my knowledge of the app and to fix this problem for my current production, I reviewed an instructional video we were provided and viewed videos I thought would be helpful. In the video we were given, the  techniques of using the app are explained, which will help me have more ease with the app during th...

Foundation Portfolio Introduction

Image
Hello and welcome back to MediaFix, we have begun the foundation portfolio's pre-production! For this assignment, my group and I will learn and apply the skills we have studied over the past few months to create the first two minutes of our own original film. When the film is complete we will give a creative reflection of our learning. My role in this film will be the cinematographer. This means I will be responsible for the film's visuals, to ensure a quality production, I will need to collaborate with the director and editor because my knowledge of the film's footage. Because my group does not have a director due to our amount of people, we will all share the role. However, my blog will focus on the lens of my role as a cinematographer and how I learn through it. The tasks my role must complete during pre-production will be the storyboard and shotlist and later on, in production and post I will work on filming and assisting the editor. Throughout my last production I hav...
